Introducing the Koontz Gymnasium.
If the walls could talk, you could hear the chants of the cheerleaders’, the roar of the Elk River fans, and the swish of the basketball from the home teams of Big Sandy High School, Clendenin High School, and Clendenin Middle School.
Home of the Clendenin Cardinals for many years, The Koontz Gymnasium still provides an auxiliary gym for the Elk River community. The floor has been completely refinished and the old Herbert Hoover High School basketball scoreboard that was rescued from The Flood of 2016 hangs proudly in the Koontz Gym today.
There is also a large stage that borders the gym floor, perfect for cultural events and performances. This venue can accommodate large crowds and has restrooms and a concession area.
Events at the Koontz Gymnasium have included the annual Elk River Muskie Club Expo, Charleston Light Opera Guild play production, 25045- Health Clinics, Elk River Rumble Kickboxing Competition, Clendenin Homecoming Festival’s Christmas Craft Show, Hoover Youth Basketball League, athletic events, conventions, homecomings, local dances, vendor events, family reunions, weddings, and other events with large audiences. Tables and chairs (for up to 250 people) are also available to rent.
